X-MEN First Class (2011) is the reason we want to go to the movies! Hands down it takes on the rest and leaves you in awe. If you're not a fan of the other films or even the comic books, you should see this film just to see the special effects.Directed by Matthew Vaughn and written by Ashley Miller, Zack Stentz, Jane Goldman and Matthew Vaughn. Story by Sheldon Turner and Bryan Singer. Starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Kevin Bacon, Rose Byrne, Jennifer Lawrence, January Jones and Oliver Platt.
This film takes us back to the childhood of Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr and shows you how they became some of the greatest archenemies of all time, Professor X and Magneto. Working together to stop the start of WWIII, a rift begins to form between the twos close nit friendship. Its the beginning to the end of their friendship and the start of Magneto's Brotherhood and Professor X's X-MEN.
Beyond the great special effects and amazing make-up, there is some fairly descent acting going on as well. I was rather nervous when I heard that Kevin Bacon (Sebastian Shaw) would be joining the cast of First Class, but after seeing him work the big screen I say he earned his keep. He seemed to have just enough villain to balance out his character Sebastian Shaw.
James McAvoy (Professor X) also surprised me. Having read the comic books, watched the cartoon and the movies, I knew Professor X in every way that I was allowed to. I was worried that he might not be able to capture the Professor as Patrick Stewart had in the previous films. After watching him as the younger Charles Xavier, I found him to handle it all very well.
Having James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender play the younger versions of Professor X and Magneto was very believable. You could envision them turning into their older counter parts. The rival between these two has been a long time in the making and turns for an amazing on screen adventure. I can't wait to see what they do with this franchise. There are so many more mutants to unveil and tons of story lines that they could pursue. This is one that everyone should see and you don't have to see the other films or be a fan of the X-MEN to get mesmerized by their tales!
